BLACK STAR, BRIGHT DAWN
by
Scott O'Dell
In the book Black Star, Bright Dawn, several
new things happen to Bright Dawn that change her life. To begin
with, Bartok, Bright Dawn's father
and Bright Dawn are out seal hunting when a terrible thing happens.
The ice
breaks and Bartok is out on a large ice floe moving along the
shore. They eventually find Bartok, but now he has
a phobia of
water so he and his family have to move away from the sea to
Ikuma. Bright Dawn has to go to
a new school and make new friends. She used to be an Eskimo
girl, but now
she's more like a white girl. Then one night the boss of Bartok's
work and his friend ask Bartok to run
in the Ititarod dogsled race. When her father gets injured, Bright
Dawn runs the Iditarod for
him. She ends up
finishing the race in last place but wins the Sportsmanship Award
and $2500. She is going to use the money to go to college in
Anchorage to become a school teacher. Once Bright
Dawn finishes the race she is a different person
than she was at the starting line. She is more grown
up, she's tougher, and she's learned many new things.
