Art classes at VUES offer a wide variety of projects integrated with the classroom curriculum and /or directed from the Art Curriculum and the Vermont 'Standards' that we strive to meet. I plan together, with most classroom teachers, projects that enrich and broaden the knowledge students are exploring. .Each year students are involved in building their skills expressing and communicating using drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, always keeping an eye for design and connections to artists, literature, history , science and math. Their learning is assessed on an ongoing basis in a sequential level of experiences--from peer sharing and positive feedback at the lower grades, to self and group critiques and evaluations at the upper grades, as well as teacher observations. Progress reports come home 2 times a year, with additional progress reported if children are struggling with behavioral issues. I include a detailed Art News in the VUES newsletter each trimester to let everyone know more specifics, as each classroom often is different, depending upon the various themes they are involved with.
Please take a moment to read over the Vt Standards that your childs' instruction has been geared toward. These standards are written for K-8, so our K-6 program does not address as much in-depth analysis and critique as would be expected at the upper levels. Each VUES student has an Art Portfolio, compiling evidence of their learning in a few areas over the grades-ie: portraits, painting, and design.
All of the district art teachers work together to present our annual Student Art Exhibit at the Bixby Library in Vergennes. VUES work can also be seen at the Post Office in Vergennes.
