POLICY: Evaluation of the Superintendent

The board shall establish evaluative criteria and shall be responsible for evaluating the performance of the superintendent.

 

The superintendent shall have the opportunity for confidential conferences with the board members on no less than three occasions in each school year. During the conferences, the board and the superintendent shall discuss the degree to which the superintendent is achieving his/her goals and objectives and any changes or assistance necessary to assure such achievement.

 

At the completion of the evaluation process, the superintendent shall be advised of the board's intention to either continue the superintendent's existing employment agreement or to offer the superintendent a successor agreement. Either action shall occur pursuant to the terms of the then existing employment agreement.

 

Evaluation of the Superintendent

 

The superintendent shall be evaluated on the basis of performance objectives developed by the board, the job description for the position of superintendent, and a statement of self-evaluation by the superintendent. The board will consider any recommendation presented by the superintendent when developing performance objectives.

 

The job description and performance objectives shall serve as the focus for a minimum of three conferences held during the school year. By July 1, the board and the superintendent shall have held a session for the purpose of discussing goals for the forthcoming school year. Upon concurrence with the board, the superintendent shall formally present those goals along with a rationale to the board at its regular August board meeting.

 

The process for evaluation of the superintendent shall include a meeting of the chairpersons of the member boards of the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union, to prepare the written evaluation to be approved by the full Supervisory Union Board.

 

The superintendent shall make periodic reports to the board during the year. The board may provide the superintendent with directions and guidance during the year to facilitate in the attainment of goals and objectives.

On or before February 1, the board chairpersons shall have completed a formal evaluation session with the superintendent. On or before February 1, the superintendent shall provide written reports describing the degree to which the district goals have been achieved.

 

Each board member shall complete the evaluation prior to the board's executive session. In their discussion, the board shall arrive at a composite board evaluation of the superintendent. A written composite, signed by the members of the Board, shall be presented to the superintendent in the executive session. This written evaluation shall be supplemented by a discussion.
