The school board is a representative body elected by the town or city to provide for and oversee the operation of the public school as defined in Title 16, Section 563 of Vermont Statutes Annotated. The school board may exercise its powers only when convened in a legally constituted meeting.

 

The school board considers that its most important functions fall into the following categories:

Policy -

Development of policy and direction to the superintendent for carrying out its policies.

Educational Planning -

           Acquiring reliable information to make the best possible decisions about the scope and nature of the educational program.

Staffing -        

          Employment of the staff necessary for carrying out the instructional program.

Financial Resources -

          Adopting a budget that will provide the financial base for staff, buildings, materials, and equipment to carry out the
          educational program.

School Facilities -    

          Determination of housing needs and building plans that will support and enhance the educational program and communicating
          needs to the community.

Appraisal -

         Requiring appraisal of the results of the educational program.

Communication with Public -

         Providing adequate means for keeping citizenry informed about the school and for keeping itself informed about the wishes
         of the public.

Judicial -                                            

         Responsible for acting as a court of appeal for students, staff and the public regarding implementation of board policy.

The school board retains full legislative and judicial authority over the school in accordance with state law and delegates executive, supervisory, and instructional authority to the superintendent as specified in policy.
