“Taking a
Look at Improving the Efficiency of Our Operations”
What?
The ANWSU
school boards have determined the need to form a representative group to:
·
look at the effectiveness
of the existing educational, administrative and board structures in ANWSU
·
consider a range of
possible alternatives to improve learning opportunities and increase
efficiencies throughout the
supervisory union
Why?
The ANWSU
school boards (there are currently 8 school boards and 31 school board
positions) want to look at alternative structures that might:
·
save money
·
provide enhanced learning
opportunities for all students
·
increase the efficiency of
district personnel and school board members
·
improve communications
·
reduce complexity and
redundancy of district operations
It’s timely
to look at these questions now because of the:
·
statewide focus on school
governance and cost containment
·
requirements of the federal
education law (No Child Left Behind Act)
·
declining student
enrollments and increasing per pupil costs
·
ongoing tension between
the desire to provide quality educational opportunities for students and local
fiscal realities
How?
In late
February and early March, the ANWSU school boards will ask the voters of each
town school district in ANWSU to approve: (a) the formation of a group of board
and community representatives and (b) some funds (net cost to ANWSU of
±$6-8,000) to support this initiative.

The study
group will meet over the course of about 9 months and assess both current
operations and other models, including those used in other districts and other
parts of the country. The study group will hold many public meetings during
which members of the ANWSU community will be able to ask questions and offer
suggestions.
When the
study group has finished its work, it will make recommendations to each of the
current ANWSU school boards. Depending upon the nature and extent of those
recommendations, the voters would be asked to approve any material changes to
the current operating structure of ANWSU.

local School Board or call the Superintendent of Schools @ 877-3332.
