Mrs.  Weldon's Fourth Grade

Welcome to  Mrs. Weldon's Fourth Grade Class!  Our teacher Mrs. Weldon is funny, smart, and creative!  She teaches math, science, social studies, writing, language, Oral Language, spelling, and reading! Mrs. Weldon is unpredictable but interesting. She has been teaching for many years.  She works hard every day. She helps us on strategies to remember things. She is very caring. Don't try to fool her! She says, "Don't fake the faker!" She knows all the tricks that fourth graders will try.
Our classroom is big. We had our wall redone over the summer. It was leaking water and had mold in it. This year, it is not as cold in the room in some places and it looks cleaner. We have pillows that we use for silent reading at the end of the day. We have USSR, Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading time.
This year, we have a new book system. We have to read 25 books in the whole year. They need to be in different genres. We enter the books in a database that is on the internet. Each day, Erik starts up the computer and shuts it down at the end of the day. We have librarians, Emily and Sophie, for the year. We have a classroom library that our students can take the books home from. Some jobs change weekly. We have people who file our papers, lunch count person, line leader, compost, white board maintenance, homework person that counts the homework that gets turned in, garbage person, table cleaning, number corner and a dumpster diver. The dumpster diver is the one that has to retrieve anything important that would fall into the trash can. The dumpster diver has to go and get a plastic glove to retrieve it.
We have Writers in our classroom. We use them for lessons and to make us better typists. We have to have 116 lessons in Level 2 completed by January. We track our speed and accuracy in a spreadsheet so we can see our progress.
We study different topics in science and social studies. We have studied rules and laws. We learned why we need rules and laws, to be fair and stay safe, and to be appropriate in public. We learned about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We are now studying light and shadows. We will study "Who Discovered America?", The Fifty States, Earth Science, electricity and magnetism and the Human Body.

This year we did the mile in Physical Education. We will learn the rules of football this year and learn how to pass the ball. We did soccer. We also use the low ropes course in class.
Fourth grade is the first year that we can join band. Almost all of the students are in band. Mr. Bowers is a very fun teacher. He used to be the band teacher at Mt. Abraham High School in Bristol, Vermont. We are glad he came to Ferrisburgh to teach. There are three flutes in the beginning band, 13 saxophones, 2 trombones and 1 baritone horn, 5 trumpets and 2 drums. Mr. Bower's favorite instrument is the baritone and trombon
e.
We made a life sized paper model of our body in art. It is difficult to get all the pieces correct. We do a lot of measuring of our legs and arms to get the model correct.
We are working on Type to Learn 4 in Technology. It is difficult, but has some fun information in it. When you finish a game, you will learn something new about history or science.
Fourth grade is responsible for harvesting peppers. We also pick raspberries. When we pick the vegetables and fruit, we have to mark it on the graph in the front hall to show how many pounds of peppers and raspberries we picked.
We have a lot more homework in fourth grade. You are expected to do more work independently. We are able to go and do band and chorus. When we do our writing, we are taught how to write a five paragraph paper. In May, fourth grade has the science NECAP test. To recapiculate, fourth grade is awesome.
