Ms. Downing's Third
Grade

Ms. Downing has curly brown hair and green eyes. She always has a
smile! She loves nature. She likes to have fun.
Ms. Downing
loves writing. We write every day. We use a four square. We are writing
about someone in our family. We get a paper with four squares on it. We
have to write a topic about what the square will be about. If we were
writing about our mother, we just write some ideas about her. So if in
one square, we wrote that our mother was loving, we would then write in
the box some examples of how she was a loving person. We would not
write full sentences there, just some ideas that we could write about
later.
She also really likes to read. She reads aloud
to us after recess. We read a book called The Witches by Roald Dahl. It is fun,
very exciting and silly. It is a fiction book, it is not true at all,
but fun to talk about. We have also heard The Giggler Treatment and Matilda.
We use the math program Bridges in third
grade. It
is really fun and has a lot of math
games that we can play. Some of our
favorite games are Anything But Five, Round Ball Tens, and Pick Two.
We do D.O.L in our class. That stands for Daily Oral
Language. We have sentences everyday that we have to fix to make them
correct.
We are studying maps in Social
Studies. We learn our
addresses and our zip codes. We have learned about our counties and our
state. We have a song that we sing about our counties. "There are 14
counties in our state, Addison
and Bennington, Caledonia, Chittenden,
Essex and Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orange and Orleans, Rutland
and Washington, Windham and Windsor. HEY!" This is sung to the
tune of Yankee Doodle.
We have spelling workbook. We have to
complete each
lesson every week. Then we have a spelling test on Friday.
We have a lot of homework this year, a lot
more than we had in second grade. We have to read 15 minutes every
night, we have to practice our math facts and sometimes we have social
studies, spelling and math homework.
In third grade, every student has a Writer.
The Writers are used to learn how to type and to type
stories. We like them, but some of us don't like having to press
the home row keys when we are practicing our keyboarding.
As you can see, our teacher is very nice. We are
learning a lot about maps, our continents, counties and towns. We are
working very hard and learning a lot.
