FCS Schoolyard Habitat Timeline

June 1999
Sixth graders build the gateway to our habitat trail, a pair of 10 x 10 ft. raised beds planted with flowers and bushes beneficial to butterflies and hummingbirds. At that time, the first phase of our trail was laid out and mowed, including a large circular section in the center of the meadow, our outdoor classroom.

Fall 1999
Dozens of food and cover bushes and trees were planted.

Spring 2000
Bluebird nesting boxes were built and installed. A bridge over a small brook was also constructed. The PTO helped to plant a white spruce wind brake. Students created brush and stone piles for cover. An old culvert was removed which helped to create a vernal pool. The process of identifying and labeling plant species began.

2000/2001
Additional plantings for food and cover were made. Six apple trees, two varieties, were planted. The hope is to add three more trees, a different variety. This way, we can have early, middle and late bearing varieties of apple trees.

2002/2003
The PTO Habitat Committee constructed wooden classroom benches for the outside classroom. The wood was graciously donated by Marvin Carvins.

2003/2004
Recently, the Habitat committee constructed signs identifying certain areas of the habitat, including some of the poison ivy!!
Mr. Stapleford's class pride project will help to build a fire pit. A portable long house is also being built.
