FERRISBURGH CENTRAL SCHOOL
FACILITY IMPROVEMENT BOND
Taking Action to Keep our Students
Safe and Healthy
Our 50-plus year old building is in need of repairs and attention
- Necessary mechanical, electrical and structural
improvements are long overdue and too costly to include in the
operating budget.
This past year we were required to close school one
day due to boiler failure. In addition, we have paid over $9,800
in boiler repairs during the past heating season – more than our entire
building repair expense the previous year.
-Necessary repairs are needed to make increase the
buildings energy efficiency.
During our most recent building improvements, funded
by the $110,000 special article approved in March 2006, we were able to
increase electrical energy efficiency by changing over our lighting
system in many parts of the building. These changes have resulted in
savings in electrical costs. (Our electric bills have remained
level, in spite of rate increases.)
The oil bill for this past heating season totaled
over $66,600 - almost twice the previous year's expense. As
you all well know, heating oil costs are even higher for a building
that is not energy efficient. An efficient heating system, as
well as improved insulation and new windows, will help to contain this
cost.
Evaluation of the building indicates that it has no
insulation in many areas, insufficient insulation in others, windows
that leak, inadequate building ventilation, a failing roof, outdated
electrical distribution system, and an outdated fire alarm system.
What will it cost?
- Estimated cost of the total project is $1.5 million - too much to
include in the operating budget and
repairs that cannot wait for a phased-in budgetary plan.
- Ferrisburgh Central School will have to bond for the total cost of
the project, as there is no state construction aid available for any
school projects in the state. The building needs cannot be
postponed until state construction aid is available sometime in the
future.
