The NECAP Math, Reading, and Writing tests are administered in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont as part of the
No Child Left Behind Act. The test measures student achievement of Grade Expectations for previous school years. Student performance on these assessments fall into one of four proficiency levels: Proficient with Distinction, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Substantially Below Proficient.  Below are the District’s
October 2011 results, reflecting all students in grades 3-8 and 11 who scored proficient and above compared to the State.

Writing

The ANWSU Writing Committee organized and implemented common writing prompts at both the elementary and secondary levels.  At the elementary level the grade level prompts were administered during the third week of January 2011.  At a following faculty meeting all teachers in the district had the opportunity to examine student work and to discuss implications for instruction. The result of this process will be a K-6 booklet of grade level writing samples that meet the standard for each respective grade. This booklet will be a reference for further discussions about student writing and is the start of creating district writing benchmarks. Additionally, the writing committee has developed a system for teachers to be collaboratively analyzing student writing on an on-going basis. The committee is planning on summer work in order to develop a writing system and a common instructional approach for teaching writing in the district. This will be available on the ANWSU website in September, 2012.

After analyzing Fall 2011 NECAP Writing results, along with student work samples, teachers of Vergennes Union Middle School will continue to focus on elaboration. Seventy percent of 8th graders were proficient or above in writing, although elaboration is still an area needing improvement.

Writing became a part of the NECAP (New England Common Assessment Program) in 2005.  Results have been reported to ANWSU each year through Fall 2008 in grades 5, 8, and 11.  In 2009, grades 5 and 8 piloted a new NECAP writing assessment.  We did receive the results for grades 5 and 8. Teachers have also spent time also examining ANWSU released writing from the NECAP throughout the supervisory union.
